Johnny Speight was a genius script writer... very clever how he made a racist old bigot into highly comical and entertaining TV... some of his scripts were brilliance

I am vehemently anti-racist but why are we constantly looking back at things through a 21st century prism and giving them a good kicking? This was gentle family entertainment. It was then and it is now. Yes, it probably can't be shown today due to portrayals of race and sexuaity but it but did it promote 'hatred' of Asians and/or gays? No - it was insensitive at best. It can be argued a lot of those old shows sought to shine a light on the ludicrous nature of most bigotry (eg - Garnett).

The 1970s and 1980s was a different time, lot of racism and the far-right very active on the streets. Immigrants were the target of proper hate, intimidation and physical assault. That was racism not IAHHM.

To the pc brigade don't judge the past by the present, confront the poison of genuine racism, and if you'll pardon the pun - lighten up.

I always liked the Stephen Fry quote about it

"“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what.""

Is this Stephen Fry who was changing the name of the Black Labrador out of the new dambusters Film/script?? JUST WONDERIN' LIKE????

I know I've mentioned this before, but I saw Don Estelle, in full "Lofty" gear, singing "Rhinestone Cowboy" under a little marquee in Basingstoke town centre about 15 years ago, it was so sad. It was raining as well.

People taking "offence" is one of the scourges of modern society.

I always liked the Stephen Fry quote about it
